first boot drive reflections

I keep reflecting back to our boot drive this past Saturday. You think you’re going out to collect nickels and dimes from random people but you quickly realize, like no other cause on the street corner, that you are connecting very emotionally with many of the passerby’s. One lady reaches out the window with a couple of dollars in her hand and tears in her eyes. A breast cancer survivor trustingly hands over a $20 bill. A current patient digs for what she can find in her purse but really just wants to say thank you for helping out. There were dozens of stories like that from the volunteers that helped us out that day. We estimated we walked somewhere between 6-8 miles up and down that intersection. We all were hot, sweaty, thirsty, hungry but we kept going and going until we ran out of info cards and the rain threatened us. We obviously didn’t do it for the money as we will see $0 of this ourselves. 100% of the pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, $1, $5, $10, and $20 collected goes to our walker fees for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day. Every person who helped out expressed interest in going back again. I can’t wait.
